The Carpe Vitam Clock – Makes impermanence visible

The digital sculpture "Carpe Vitam Clock" was created in 2022 with the aim of making something visible that would otherwise remain hidden from us: our transience. It counts the individually remaining statistical lifetime - in seconds, so that the clock is always alive. The sculpture is meant as a constant reminder to make the most of life. But it should also motivate you to exceed your own life expectancy through a healthy, prudent lifestyle. Their algorithm is set on the current value of the "life expectancy at birth". In Europe, this is around 78 years for men and 82.5 years for women. Whenever and wherever you reconnect the clock to the power - it always finds its way back to the correct number of seconds. Since life expectancy increases slightly with each "survived" year, the older you are now, the better your chances are of reaching the zero once. After reaching zero, the Carpe Vitam Clock counts up again and every 10 seconds the question "Still alive?" and the thought "It's a gift!" appear. The GPS controlled digital sculpture Carpe Vitam Clock is a solid oak and metal edition, handcrafted and individualized by the artist. It measures 21 x 31 x 11 cm, weighs 3.2 kg and consumes around 0.3 watts (5 volts). Incidentally, patina, scratches and cracks are part of the work - it's about transience!
